With the shimmering water and riveting reflections, Attabad Lake is undoubtedly one of the most breathtakingly beautiful lakes located in the Hunza Valley, Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan. The lake was formed in January 2010 as a result of a natural disaster. The lake becomes a major tourist attraction and tourists can enjoy a ton of adventure including water sports including boating, jet skiing, and many other recreational activities.
The village of Attabad in Hunza Valley was buried by a massive landslide on 4 January 2010. The landslide killed twenty people and displaced thousands of people in the region. According to reports, boulders from the mountains around came crashing down and buried the village. Four other villages Ainabad, Gulmit, Gulkin, and Shishkat along with Attabad Village were also destroyed. A large number of wooden houses, mosques, temples, orchids, and Buddhist relics were drowned in the lake. The army has evacuated the residents and temporarily moved them to another valley.
The landslide has blocked the flow of River Hunza for almost five months. It led to the creation of a new lake, by June the water reached over 21 km with a depth over 100 m and started flowing over the landslide dam that destroyed almost 170 houses and 120 shops. The resident faced a lot of problems including a shortage of food, medicines, and another item due to the blockage of Karakoram Highway.
A few months later, it became a full-fledged lake flowing along the narrow valley. Although the lake was the result of a natural disaster people can’t ignore the breathtaking beauty of the lake. The Gilgit Baltistan region is already blessed with spectacular lakes, Attabad Lake further enhances the beauty of the region.
